For Amcal+ Mordialloc pharmacist Adam Lyn, there are two key traits he believes are the most important to being a successful pharmacist: being a good listener and a good communicator.
“These two traits are paramount for success,” said Adam. “They allow you to gain information and then make assessments for patients. And with good communication, you can express things in a manner they understand.”
He believes that developing a good sense of empathy also helps. “Empathy is the last piece of the puzzle as it puts yourself in your patient’s shoes to show them love and compassion when dealing with them.”
Living in Melbourne but raised in the United States by his Jamaican-born parents, Adam loves to travel to both countries and finds value in reconnecting with his family and heritage.
“I love to travel,” said Adam. “When I’m back there (the US), I make some pretty big decisions which I execute when I am back home here in Australia. I get a chance to discuss things with people who have known me forever.”
Adam finds a sense of perspective when he travels, and no more so than when he visits his parents’ homeland, Jamaica. “This small underdeveloped country always shows me humility and gives me gratitude to know where they have come from, where I am going, and what I have,” he said. “The island is so vibrant and energetic that it always makes me happy and gives me motivation on my journey.”
A reflective person and deep thinker, Adam values and appreciates the ethos of teamwork. “Behind all great individuals is a great partner or team. You can’t do everything yourself. You need to invest in your team. My team is very experienced, and they motivate and inspire me each day to be greater, and I also learn from them.”
Whilst he considers it a bit of a cliché, at the core of what Adam loves about being a pharmacist is being able to help people. “And being a part of the community,” he adds. “It helps me give back.”
In 2024, Adam was incredibly appreciative and proud to be nominated for the City/Metropolitan Pharmacist of the Year award. But awards aside, Adam’s proudest moments are perhaps the simplest ones: of being the local community pharmacist and teaming up with other health providers to provide better patient outcomes.
“I love chatting with patients when I see them in the local area and learning about their families. Seeing the growth of patients as they improve and get back to good health is very rewarding.”
