With 5.57 million pharmacists worldwide, World Pharmacist Day offers a significant opportunity to highlight the crucial role pharmacy teams play by providing trusted, accessible health care to their communities every day.
On behalf of the entire team at Sigma Healthcare, we thank all pharmacists for the valuable role you play in supporting healthier communities every day and for helping to improve the health outcomes of your patients.
As the world faces more complex, interconnected health challenges, ensuring strong, sustainable healthcare is more vital than ever. Pharmacists are one of the most accessible healthcare professionals which allows them to make a real difference in improving health outcomes. They help patients use their medicines safely and effectively, provide preventative services such as vaccinations and health checks, and offer timely advice without the need for an appointment. By building trusted relationships and supporting people in managing their health, pharmacists reduce pressure on the wider health system while strengthening community wellbeing.
Today, we are pleased to spotlight Martinique Aprile, award-winning pharmacist and Mackay Discount Drug Store Managing Pharmacist, who was inspired by the impact her father, also a pharmacist, had on his community. What she loves most about being a pharmacist is the opportunity to make a tangible difference in people’s lives every single day. She enjoys the fast-paced environment, the daily variety, and the opportunity to help people with their health queries and support them in managing their wellbeing. She also finds it deeply rewarding to mentor younger pharmacists and staff, helping them grow their careers and passion for community care.

Regional Practice
Working in a regional community where access to healthcare can be more limited with fewer specialists and longer wait times, brings unique challenges compared to metropolitan practice. Pharmacists often become the first point of contact for patients seeking advice or support. Workforce shortages can also place pressure on pharmacies to maintain services while meeting the needs of a growing community. These challenges require adaptability, collaboration, and a strong commitment to patient care.
Martinique commented, “I have found that by building strong relationships with local GPs, allied health professionals, and community organisations, as well as maximising the expanded scope of pharmacy practice, we are able to provide timely, high-quality care and ensure patients don’t fall through the cracks. At the same time, one of the great rewards of working regionally is the close-knit nature of the community and the strong connections we build with patients and their families.”
World Pharmacist Day 2025 Theme: ‘Think Health, Think Pharmacist’
To Martinique, the theme ‘Think Health, Think Pharmacist’ reflects the vital role pharmacists play as trusted and accessible healthcare professionals.
She said, “It’s a reminder that when people think about their health, whether it’s managing a chronic condition, seeking preventative care, or simply asking a question about their medicines, their pharmacist should be front of mind. Pharmacists are not only dispensers of medicines but also educators, advisors, and advocates for healthier living. “
Over her 15 years of experience, Martinique has seen the landscape of pharmacy change – from the introduction of MedsChecks, to influenza vaccinations, and now full scope of practice. These developments have all been positive and have enabled pharmacists to play an even greater role in patient care.
“I look forward to seeing what the rest of my career holds and how I can continue to make a meaningful impact on the quality of life for patients and communities I serve.”
To Martinique, being a pharmacist means being a trusted presence in the community—someone people can turn to without hesitation. It’s about combining knowledge and compassion to improve lives and build strong, lasting relationships with their patients and families.”
Happy World Pharmacist Day!
